Sony has sold 43 patents related to virtual reality technologies to Meta. The deal may signal a reduction in the company’s presence in the VR market.
The reason likely lies in weak PS VR2 sales and a lack of exclusive titles: Sony has released only two first-party games for the headset. Separately, it has been reported that the company decided against ramping up production of OLEDoS displays for the Apple Vision Pro.
Meanwhile, Meta is betting on smart glasses; according to Omdia, shipments of such devices rose by 127% in the first half of the year, with Meta capturing an 81% market share.
It seems unlikely we can expect a PlayStation VR3.
Judging by all of Sony’s previous moves, virtual reality is not a high priority in the PlayStation strategy. That said, in October 2024, Eric Lempel, Senior Vice President at Sony Interactive Entertainment, described VR as an important area for the company.
