The VR fitness service Supernatural, known to many as one of the main games for Meta Quest, is returning. Meta stopped developing it, and the rights were reclaimed by its original creators. Supernatural will now be managed by a new, separate company, Supernatural Health. It was founded by Chris Milk and Aaron Koblin, who once founded the studio Within, along with their team of renowned trainers.

In 2023, Meta had to endure an eight-month antitrust battle to acquire Within, the developer of Supernatural. The deal cost $400 million plus legal costs. After all this effort, Meta laid off a significant portion of its VR team and announced it would cease development of the project. However, in a rare act of mercy, Meta listened to Supernatural users who protested its closure.

Approximately five months after the project was frozen, Meta allowed the Supernatural team to spin off into an independent company, Supernatural Health, which will continue to develop the app. “Supernatural will be reborn. The same trainers, the same DNA, the same obsession with making fitness the best part of the day—now we’re starting from scratch as a new, independent company. <..> We’re grateful for the platform and the resources Meta has provided us at a critical stage of growth. This transition reflects the shared belief that the Supernatural community is best served by a cohesive, independent team,” its website says.

Meta has realized how valuable Supernatural is as a brand. The current version of the app, currently supported by Meta, will be available until December 3, 2026. In the coming months, Supernatural Health promises to share more details about how they will migrate accounts and when they will launch.
