Alta announced the closure of the multiplayer RPG A Township Tale (2021) next month, marking the second major setback this year after the studio ceased work on its next game, Reave.

Alta co-founder and technical director Joel van de Vorstenbosch announced the news in the game’s Discord channel, noting that the studio had considered several save game methods, which ultimately failed.

The game is now scheduled to close on July 20th, which also includes its removal from the Quest Store and the closure of the PC VR installer.

A Township Tale can be considered an MMO-like game, offering an open world with a wide variety of roles, allowing users to survive, craft, and build together in an abandoned settlement. The game supports up to 8 players on Quest and up to 40 on PC VR, yet it effortlessly creates the illusion of a much larger scale.

Initially launched in Early Access on PC VR headsets in 2018, a successful launch on Quest in 2021 allowed Alta to secure over $12 million in funding, which was then used to expand the studio and accelerate the development of A Township Tale.

Despite the studio progressing to the point of conducting several months of open testing, Reave’s development was ultimately cancelled in May 2026, with the studio citing “increasingly challenging market conditions.”
