Major League Baseball (MLB) is bringing back its virtual ballpark, which will host four regular-season games in September. This innovative platform, created by the London-based company Improbable, allows fans to watch games in real-time, recreated in a 3D environment. Interactive watch parties for selected games will be held every Wednesday in September.
The MLB virtual ballpark resembles a metaverse experience, similar to Second Life, but is designed for traditional (non-VR) devices. Fans can observe player movements through 3D avatars that accurately reflect their positions and actions on the field. The technology uses the same Sony Hawk-Eye cameras employed for the league’s Statcast analytics system.
The audio element is also a crucial part of the experience, enabling viewers to hear live commentary and game sounds, as well as interact with other fans through spatial audio. New this season is a party system that allows direct communication with friends. Additionally, the league is bringing back a virtual scavenger hunt to keep viewers engaged.
MLB’s virtual ballpark debuted during the 2023 season, initially for an All-Star exhibition game, followed by a late regular-season game and a postseason matchup. This year’s virtual lineup kicks off today, with three more games throughout September:
- September 4: Twins vs. Rays
- September 11: Reds vs. Cardinals
- September 18: Giants vs. Orioles
- September 25: Rays vs. Tigers
