Meta Corporation will conduct a major restructuring of its Reality Labs division, which focuses on the metaverse and virtual reality technologies. Among other things, its gaming teams will be affected.
Mass layoffs have led to the closure of Twisted Pixel (Marvel’s Deadpool VR), Sanzaru Games (Asgard’s Wrath 2), and Armature Studios (Resident Evil 4 VR), the studios developing some of the most ambitious titles for Quest. According to the YouTube channel Gamertag VR, Meta has also canceled development of a large-scale, unannounced Harry Potter VR game, which was being developed by Skydance.
In a comment to Kotaku, Meta confirmed massive layoffs within the Camouflaj team, which released Batman: Arkham Shadow exclusively for Quest 3 headsets in 2024. A new Batman game, in development at Sanzaru Games, has also been canceled. Development of the fitness app Supernatural has also been reportedly halted, and support for third-party developers is being phased out.
Meta representatives confirmed the information, stating that the corporation intends to redirect some of the funds allocated for metaverse development to wearable devices such as smart glasses and bracelets.
