Nearly three decades after its original release, MDK, the cult-classic shooter from Shiny Entertainment, is playable on Android thanks to an unofficial fan-made port called MDK-SDL. The project brings the complete 1997 game to modern devices, with enhanced graphics, mod support and experimental VR features.
Originally released for PC in 1997, MDK follows Kurt Hectic, an unlikely hero tasked with saving Earth from enormous alien mining machines known as Minecrawlers. The game earned a lasting reputation for its unusual humor, inventive level design, precision sniper mechanics and high-speed action.
The original experience, now on Android
Developed by an enthusiast known as nautilusbits, MDK-SDL aims to preserve the original campaign rather than deliver a stripped-down mobile adaptation. The port includes the game’s levels, cinematics, mission briefings and other original content.
Android players can use touchscreen controls or connect a compatible gamepad, including Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch-style controllers. The project also supports Windows, Linux and macOS on Apple Silicon.
Enhanced graphics and experimental VR
One of the port’s biggest additions is an optional enhanced visual mode, featuring improved lighting, shadows, anti-aliasing and support for higher-resolution textures. Players can switch back to the original presentation for a more faithful 1990s experience.
MDK-SDL also offers stereoscopic 3D and a VR viewer mode designed for phone-based headsets similar to Google Cardboard. Gyroscope-based head tracking lets players change their view by moving their heads, although a controller is recommended for gameplay.
Mod support provides further customization options, making the project more than a straightforward compatibility update.
What players need to know
The Android version requires a 64-bit device running Android 8.0 or later, along with compatible Vulkan graphics support. Touch controls are available, although some aspects may still need refinement.
There is one important catch: MDK-SDL does not include the original game’s data files. Players must supply files from their own legitimate copy of MDK, such as a version purchased through GOG or Steam.
The project is available through the developer’s MDK-SDL GitHub repository, where users can find releases, installation instructions and technical details.
While this is not an official revival from the original developers, MDK-SDL offers a new way to experience a distinctive PC shooter. For longtime fans, it is a chance to revisit a beloved classic; for newcomers, it is an opportunity to discover one of the more unconventional action games of the late 1990s.
