Sony appears to be quietly scaling back its PlayStation VR2 business, as the company’s virtual reality headset has disappeared from its official online stores in the United States and Japan. The move has raised fresh questions about the future of PlayStation’s VR ambitions.

According to a report published by Road to VR on November 3, 2026, the headset has gradually disappeared from Sony’s PlayStation Direct stores, with the removal process reportedly beginning in mid-October.

PlayStation VR2 Disappears From Key Markets

The situation is not identical across all regions. While customers in the US and Japan can no longer purchase the headset directly from Sony, PlayStation VR2 is still listed in the company’s UK and European online stores.

In Canada, Australia and New Zealand, Sony’s website redirects customers to third-party retailers.

Availability at other major retailers is also becoming increasingly limited. In the US, Amazon listings have largely disappeared, while some remaining offers on platforms such as Best Buy reportedly come from third-party sellers at significantly higher prices.

Is Sony Discontinuing PlayStation VR2?

Sony has not officially announced that PlayStation VR2 has been discontinued. However, the latest developments suggest that the company may be approaching the end of its current sales cycle.

The headset launched in February 2023 with a price tag of $549.99, offering advanced features such as OLED displays, eye tracking and adaptive headset feedback. In March 2025, Sony permanently reduced its recommended price to $399.99.

Despite its impressive hardware, PS VR2 has struggled to build the same market momentum as some competing VR platforms. Limited first-party software support and a relatively high initial price have also affected its position in the market.

What Happens Next?

For existing owners, the latest developments do not mean their headsets will stop working. PlayStation VR2 remains compatible with supported PS5 games and can also connect to a PC using Sony’s dedicated adapter.

The bigger question is whether Sony plans to continue investing in dedicated VR hardware and software.

Until the company makes an official announcement, the disappearance of PlayStation VR2 from selected regional stores should be viewed as a possible sign of a sales wind-down rather than confirmation of its discontinuation.
