In January, CD Projekt RED banned REAL Mod, a popular VR mod for Cyberpunk 2077, according to Luke Ross, the mod’s developer. The ban was due to Ross distributing the mod for a fee through his Patreon.

The mod in question is REAL Mod by modder Luke Ross, which received Cyberpunk 2077 support in February 2022 and allowed for even greater immersion in Night City.

Ross reported that he recently received a DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) notice from CD Projekt Red demanding the removal of the Cyberpunk 2077 VR mod, which he complied with.

Unlike most mods, REAL Mod is not distributed freely, but requires a subscription to Ross’s personal Patreon—$10 per month. The premium nature of the project is what provoked CD Projekt Red’s reaction.

Following this, CD Projekt RED itself commented on the situation: Jan Rosner, one of the studio’s executives, noted that Ross had violated the company’s rules for using fan content, as the company prohibits profiting from its intellectual property.

The mod will be allowed to return if the author makes it free.
