Google launched an experimental feature for the Android XR operating system that transforms regular 2D apps into 3D experiences. The feature became available on Tuesday for users of the Samsung Galaxy XR mixed reality headset.
The technology also has a number of technical limitations. Specifically, it only supports content with a resolution no higher than 1080 pixels at 30 frames per second, and activating spatial mode increases battery consumption.
Along with the 3D mode, the platform also received other interface updates, such as the ability to pin app windows directly to walls. Users can also now see their hands when interacting with virtual objects in home space mode. To improve usability, a session save feature was added: when putting on the headset after a pause, the apps you were using before releasing it instantly open.
The device’s ecosystem continues to grow rapidly, with over 100 apps now available for XR in the Google Play store.
