The free VR gaming platform Rec Room will cease operations on June 1, 2026. The project’s developers announced this, noting that this day will mark the service’s 10th anniversary, having launched in 2016.

Rec Room was a social gaming platform available on Xbox (One, Series X/S), PlayStation 4 and 5, Oculus Quest, Pico (Neo 3, 4, 4 Ultra), Nintendo Switch, and other devices. The project was often compared to Roblox due to its emphasis on user-generated content and cooperative play.

Company representatives reported that over the past decade, users have logged approximately 68,000 years in the platform’s games, made over half a billion friends, and created a huge number of rooms and content. However, the company acknowledges that Rec Room’s expenses have always exceeded its revenue. Changes in the VR market and the general challenges of the gaming industry have created additional challenges.

The platform has already begun preparing for server shutdown. The developers have limited functionality. Creating new accounts, adding friends, and subscribing to Rec Room+ are now unavailable.
