Valve has launched mass production of a new VR headset, targeting a 2025 release. Chinese analytics group XR Research Institute has revealed production details for the device, unofficially known as Deckard and presumably rebranded as the Steam Frame.

According to analysts, production capacity is designed to produce between 400,000 and 600,000 units annually.

The stated production scale is roughly comparable to that of the Apple Vision Pro headset and indicates that Valve’s device will occupy a premium niche in the market. Experts estimate that, assuming the research group’s data is accurate, the price of the new headset could be quite high, reaching $1,000 or more.

It is emphasized that Valve’s work on the new device is not a rumor, as the company has repeatedly confirmed these plans over the past four years, hinting that the headset will be focused on wireless streaming from a personal computer. During this time, references to a device codenamed “Deckard” have been repeatedly found in SteamVR code, and late last year, Roy controller models similar in design to the Touch were discovered.

The device’s release could significantly impact the competitive landscape and renew interest in high-performance PC VR systems.
