A new version of the Unreal Engine remaster of the cult RPG “Gothic 1 Classic” was released in late September. The update is just over 3 GB in size and includes a new game mode, along with other improvements.
The project is based on a fan-made remaster built on the modern Unreal Engine, which the publisher had previously added as an official beta branch. To launch the VR version, you need to open the properties for *Gothic 1 Classic* in your Steam library, switch to the `unrealbeta – Gothic Classic in Unreal` branch, and wait for the updated components to download automatically. Once that is done, simply enter the `-vr` command in the launch options field.
The gameplay has undergone extensive adaptation for VR headsets and motion controllers. The experience has shifted to a first-person perspective featuring full positional hand tracking. Players can manually swing swords and axes, block enemy attacks, aim bows and crossbows, and use magic scrolls—such as “Rain of Fire”—against large foes. The demonstration showcased battles against Scavengers, Hornets, Minecrawlers, and Trolls.
In addition to the combat system, the developers have brought non-combat mechanics into virtual reality. Features include physically mining ore with a pickaxe, forging weapons on an anvil using a smithing hammer, and exploring the game’s camps. Character dialogue interfaces, as well as health and mana bars, have been redesigned as floating elements that do not obstruct the player’s view while navigating the world.
