Google has released a preliminary version of the platform for creating applications for the Android XR operating system. This was reported in the Android Developers Blog.
The first version the public will see is Project Moohan, a mixed reality headset developed by Samsung. It will be available for purchase next year, but details are scarce. Developers already have access to the new version of Android XR.
Few additional details are known at this time, beyond a render of the headset and examples in Google’s video. Google’s list of likely built-in features includes Gemini, Maps, Photos, Translate, Chrome, Circle to Search, and Messages. Additionally, existing Android apps, or at least those that will be updated, should also be available on the new platform.
Based on the video and descriptions, Project Moohan appears to be aimed at the same use cases as Apple’s Vision Pro, with an emphasis on family photos, TV viewing, and productivity, rather than a VR gaming headset.
However, the OS is currently in the early stages of development, and there are no exact release dates yet.
