Google Buys HTC’s VR Headset Division

Google has announced the purchase of Taiwanese HTC’s Vive virtual reality headset division. The deal is valued at $250 million.

At the end of last year, Google announced a new operating system, Android XR, designed for mixed reality devices. The purchase of the new asset will accelerate the development of a software platform for VR headsets and augmented reality glasses.

As part of the agreement, some of the engineers from the HTC VIVE division will transfer to work for Google. In addition, the American company will also receive a non-exclusive license to use HTC’s intellectual property in the field of mixed reality. At the same time, the Taiwanese company will retain its rights to use and further develop solutions in this area.

At the same time, Google is stepping up its efforts in the field of solutions for augmented, virtual and mixed reality. For example, the company recently introduced a special version of Android for them, plus Google is developing an XR device together with Samsung.
