BMW M Mixed Reality was first introduced to M owners a year ago when a personal trainer was presented at the group’s exhibition in Maisach. Now, fans of the brand can immerse themselves in a digital world while sitting behind the wheel of a BMW M car and driving it in a virtual digital world.
The technology uses precise GPS positioning and real-time data transmission to link the car’s movements with a virtual reality headset. The system works with a variety of BMW M models, including both petrol and electric cars.

BMW first demonstrated this mixed reality technology at the Lisbon Technology Summit in November 2022. Since last fall, drivers have been able to try it out at the BMW M Driving Experience circuit in Maisach, Germany. The company also launched a pilot project at its Performance Driving School in California in 2023.

Now BMW is adding new features to make the experience even more immersive. Drivers will soon be able to virtually race each other in two different cars. Friends will even be able to watch the race live through virtual reality headsets such as the Meta Quest or Apple Vision Pro using personal avatars.

Following the M series, the MINI brand will also get its own virtual world. The BMW Group plans to offer customers a multi-sensory driving experience in mixed reality.
