A team of engineers with the participation of Sony presented the YUBI research project.
YUBI is a desktop device that resembles a modified ergonomic mouse with finger rests. The finger rests recognize pressure and convert it into continuous movements of the avatar’s body, including rotation in any direction and manual operations.
The controller allows for actions such as manipulation of objects and navigation using only the strength of the fingers. This helps overcome the physical limitations of most users, and with dynamic haptic feedback. Thanks to it, a person can perceive the properties of a virtual object (for example, weight and hardness).
The developers say that “the project is based on recent theoretical developments such as the free energy principle, which postulates that embodiment arises from the matching of predicted and actual sensory input in a motor-multisensory model.
