Finnish company VR FleetCare has successfully completed the upgrade of an Alstom X40 electric train intended for use in Sweden. The three-car train is already running between Stockholm and Västerås.
Trains of this model, designed for operation at speeds of up to 200 km/h, were delivered by Alstom in 2004-2008. The modernization allows to extend their service life by 15 years.
As part of the work carried out, the interior and exterior were completely renovated, the toilets were repaired. The cabin now has places for bicycles, a new lighting system and windows that transmit mobile signals better were installed.
The €35 million contract for the modernization of 27 trains was signed in April 2023. Each train is being modernized at the sites in Oulo and Pjeksäki, where the company’s specialists work.
Swedish national carrier SJ plans to complete the acceptance of all modernized trains by January 2028. This will improve passenger comfort and extend the service life of rail transport.
