Valve is preparing to enter the virtual reality market. According to insiders, in 2025 the company will introduce a standalone VR headset called Deckard, which will be its answer to the market-dominating Quest devices.
According to information from Gabe Follower, known for his connections with Valve announcements, Gabe Newell’s company plans to release the device before the end of this year. The insider also reveals some details about Deckard.
Firstly, the headset will be completely autonomous, equipped with its own computing “stuffing” and will not require a connection to a PC. This will allow users to play not only VR projects, but also classic games in “virtual screen” mode.
Secondly, Deckard will be based on the Steam Deck architecture, but with significant improvements to support more demanding graphics. The headset will likely come with exclusive mini-games demonstrating its capabilities – an approach that Valve has already successfully used with Index and Steam Deck devices.
Deckard, if leaks are to be believed, could redefine wireless VR standards, combining the freedom of Quest with the quality of PC versions. According to rumors, the device could cost $1,200, but it is unknown how reliable this information is.
