Microsoft has stopped production of its HoloLens 2 virtual reality headset. Consumers and business customers have one last chance to buy it before stocks run out. HoloLens 2 will receive “critical security and software updates” until December 31, 2027. Software support for the VR headset will end in early 2028.
The HoloLens 2 headset has advanced features, including eye tracking, improved hand tracking, and more. The headset was mainly aimed at the corporate market. According to UploadVR, against the backdrop of the release of new VR headsets XR and Quest 3, HoloLens 2 turned out to be uncompetitive. In addition, in 2022, Microsoft’s VR division lost its leader, and in the following two years, a wave of layoffs swept through it. At the same time, according to Microsoft, the closure of consumer production of headsets will not affect HoloLens IVAS, a version of HoloLens adapted for the military. Microsoft will continue to fulfill all contracts concluded with the US Department of Defense.
The US Army plans to conduct new operational tests of the device in early 2025 before deciding whether to begin full-scale production of the VR headset by the end of next year.
