Meta Changed Its Mind About Opening Horizon OS To Third-Party VR Headset Makers

Meta announced the suspension of its program, under which the company intended to provide third-party device makers with access to its Horizon OS platform for mixed reality headsets.

The program was part of a project to develop the metaverse—the company wanted to build a “new generation of equipment” and expand consumers’ choice of devices for working in the digital worlds of Meta.

Meta named Asus and Lenovo as the first partners it’s collaborating with on new Horizon OS-based headsets. Asus was reportedly developing a “brand-new high-performance gaming headset,” while Lenovo was supposedly working on “mixed reality devices for productivity, education, and entertainment.”

But as we’ve now learned, neither of these headsets will likely see the light of day. Meta says it has suspended its third-party Horizon OS headset development program.

“We’ve paused the program to focus on creating high-quality, in-house hardware and software needed to grow the VR market,” a Meta spokesperson stated.

The tech giant’s top management is now paying less and less attention to the metaverse, having been supplanted by artificial intelligence. It was recently announced that expenses at its core division, Reality Labs, could be cut by up to 30%.
