Meta announced the Quest 3S, the latest virtual reality headset from its Reality Labs division and a cheaper price than its predecessor.
The Quest 3S offers the same mixed reality and virtual reality features, as well as the same level of performance, as the Quest 3. It’s powered by the same Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor as its predecessor, meaning the Quest 3S will be able to run the same games and apps. The Quest 3S comes with a pair of Touch Plus controllers, just like the Quest 3, and the Quest 3S has a claimed battery life of 2.5 hours, compared to 2.2 hours for the Quest 3.
However, the new product is slightly different from the Quest 3. For example, it is slightly larger and offers a different arrangement of sensors on the front panel. The Quest 3S does not have a depth sensor. Perhaps the most obvious difference between the Quest 3S and the Quest 3 is the display resolution. The Quest 3S displays an image of 1832 × 1920 pixels per eye (the same resolution as the Quest 2 VR headset). For the Quest 3, this figure is 2064 × 2208 pixels per eye. In addition, the Quest 3S has a narrower viewing angle.
The device will go on sale on October 15 and will start at $299, which is lower than the $499 starting price of the 2023 Quest 3.
